JAZZY FROM MEMPHIS

WHAT’S IT LIKE BEING A FEMALE ARTIST IN MEMPHIS?

Being a female artist in Memphis for me right now is most definitely a beautiful experience. Majority of the female artist are collaborating on projects and coming together to bring a new perspective of being a Memphis Woman to the World. To be apart of this culture change within the city is a blessing. Looking back, female artist were more so in competition instead of being each other’s motivation. I feel as I’m apart of a growing army, ready to fight for our respect and placement in this Industry because Memphis Women will forever Matter!

WHEN DID YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH MUSIC?

I’ve always loved music. I remember writing my first song when I was only in the 3rd grade. Music has been around me my whole life. I believe I actually feel in love with music when I was old enough to understand the pain, love and other emotions that go into the creations of a song. I remember going back to listen to all the old jams my mom and grandmothers would play when I was younger. I would dissect the structures of each song, listen to all the background harmonies and really listen to the words. The love I had for music became crystal clear to me when I was 16 years old.

WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO START MAKING YOUR OWN MUSIC?

I decided to make my own music in 2016. For so long I would write songs in journals but I never recorded them. My first song that was officially recorded was in my good friends apartment and we made a song titled “Another Love Song”. After hearing my voice for the first time through a speaker I fell in love then and there. I would spend my last dollars for studio sessions because I felt confident about my voice and my talents.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC? HOW DOES YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC DIFFER FROM OTHERS?

My music can be described as a mixture of things. I like to create my music based off of my emotions. Sometimes I am very low and sad so I may write slower r&b songs. Other times I may feel full of life, positive and vibrant so I will write more Neo Soul songs. But being from Memphis, I may feel a little “crunkness” in me and want to write songs that are more up beat. My music is a vibe. The vibrations you’ll feel from my voice will help you understand how I was feeling when I created that piece. That’s something that I believe differentiates me from other artist. When I write my music, I want to make connections. I want the listeners to feel my emotions and appreciate my vulnerability through my music.

ARE THERE ANY CREATIVES THAT INSPIRE YOU?

Most definitely, locally there are many creatives that have inspired me since I first popped up in the scene. There’s a few artist that have taken me under their wings and showed me the ropes and I appreciate them forever. The first creative that ever gave me a chance on stage was Sumo Tre and he’s done so with so many other Memphis Artist. There are many creatives in the city that have came into my life that have shown me things I never thought I needed to know. This city is full of creative geniuses and if I were to get to naming everyone that has inspired me, we’d need a part two.

EXPLAIN YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH THE LOCKER ROOM?

My experience with the Locker Room was life changing! I’ve been doing music since 2016 and this was my first major production to be apart of. Every one apart of the Locker Room team treated me like nothing less of a Star. Ashley Ave made sure everything came together and was very fun to work with.

HOW DO YOU SEE THIS COMPANY IMPACTING THE CULTURE?

I see this company changing the culture in a very positive way. By giving artist the spotlight and exposure they need, other production companies will jump on board with the live performance wave.  I see the Locker Room being as big as 106 and Park and known nationwide. I can’t wait to see what the Locker Room does next!--
